Does EMF Radiation Effect Sleep?

As day turns to night our brain makes a chemical called Melatonin which causes drowsiness and lowers our body temperature which causes us to fall asleep. Sleep can be divided into three phases: light sleep, deep sleep and dream sleep also known as REM. These phases are characterised by different activities in the brain.

The inability to get sleep or sleep well at night can be caused by many things such as stress, health issues, noise, too much stimulation before bedtime (playing video games, watching tv, or exercising), or uncomfortable sleeping conditions. However, in recent years there have been several studies on the effect that EMF radiation can have on sleep.

Does EMF Radiation Affect Sleep?

A review of more than two dozen studies on low-frequency EMFs suggests these energy fields may cause various neurological and psychiatric problems as well as reduce the production of Melatonin in our brain. One such study found a link between EMF exposure and actual changes in human nerve function throughout the body affecting our sleep.  (https://www.nature.com/articles/srep21774)

We spend a third of our life asleep.  Sleep allows our body and mind to rest. It is imperative for proper cognitive, metabolic and immune function that we get adequate sleep. Studies have shown that poor sleep can directly affect our health.

In another study conducted in 1999 at the Midwest Research Institute, Charles Graham and Mary R. Cook reported that an intermittent magnetic field exposure may disrupt sleep. Electro-biological research of sleep showed that EMF exposure at night has more severe effects on health in comparison to EMF exposure during the day.

How Does EMF Radiation Affect Sleep?

Constant exposure to EMF radiation disrupts the production of Melatonin, which plays a crucial role in controlling our sleep cycle. Devices such as mobile phones and laptops which are always kept close to the pillow while sleeping affect the production of melatonin. If we use these devices right before we sleep, the chances of melatonin reduction increases which results in making it more difficult for us to fall asleep and stay asleep.

According to the California Department of Public Health Sleeping with or near devices which expose you to EMF radiation can cause extreme sleep loss, insomnia, low immunity, depression, hypertension, reproduction issues, mood disturbances and even increase the risk of brain cancer.

What can you do to Protect Yourself from EMF Radiation While you Sleep?

While it is difficult to avoid the use of these wireless or electrical devices, we can restrict our exposure while we sleep.  The distance to which EMF radiation is from your body may determine the effect it will have on you and your sleep patterns.

The following is a list of suggestions to help protect you from EMF radiation while you sleep:

  • Keeping those devices that emit EMF radiation at least 6 feet away from your bed is the simplest and most effective way to get a better sleep.
  • Relocate your Wi-Fi router from your bedroom to another room
  • Unplug appliances that are not in use (microwave, radios, computers)
  • Do not sleep under an electric blanket or electric heating pad
  • You may want to consider an EMF Meter, like this one on Amazon, to monitor EMF exposure.

Overall, the message is that there is a possibility that EMF radiation may decrease melatonin production and may increase reactive oxidation which can reduce the amount and quality of sleep you get.
