EMF’s, or electro-magnetic fields, are all around us in the natural world. The earth, moving bodies of water, and even our own bodies have their own EMF’s and these sources of radiation are constantly interacting with each other.
But did you know that we are also bombarded with unnatural radiation every time we come near electronics and modern communication technologies, such as smartphones?
Before we go deeper into this topic, let me answer your question. Do smartphones still emit radiation while not in use?
Even when you aren’t making a call or browsing the internet, your phone emits some radiation to stay in contact with cell towers and WiFi points. Luckily, when you power your smartphone off it stops producing radiation completely. That is why I recommend turning off your smartphone at night and when you aren’t using it for an extended period of time.
Now that we’ve gotten the basics out of the way, let’s take a look at how smartphones use RF radiation and how you can minimize your exposure.
Smartphones and Radiation- What’s the Connection?
Smartphones operate by communicating with cell towers through radiofrequency waves emitted by their antennae. This energy passes through everything near the antenna, including our bodies and internal organs.
The artificial EMF’s produced by smartphones are much more powerful than those found in nature and may be impacting your health.
In fact, a growing body of evidence has demonstrated that the powerful EMF’s created by our portable electronic devices may be responsible for a range of health conditions including:
- Trouble sleeping
- Mood Swings
- Anxiety
- Hypertension
- Difficulty concentrating
- Specific forms of cancer
- Fertility issues
- Many others
It’s no wonder that people are growing increasingly concerned with the safety of our devices, especially our smartphones.
Are We Overexposed to Smartphone Radiation?
Recently, I conducted an experiment to see how long my body was in contact with my smartphone throughout the day. I had read a lot about the negative effects of spending too much time in near proximity to electronic devices and I wanted to get an idea of my exposure level.
The results of my experiment stunned me. In a regular, 24-hour day, I spent at least 10 hours in direct contact with my smartphone and at least 22 hours in near proximity to my phone.
For much of the day, I keep my smartphone in my pocket, so I am in continuous contact with my phone for hours at a time. When I sleep, I use my cellphone as an alarm clock, and it is never more than two feet from the side of my bed.
If you use a smartphone at work, like I do, then you are probably being exposed to a similar amount of electromagnetic radiation.
Smartphone Radiation and Children
And it’s not just adults who are at risk for exposure to this type of electromagnetic radiation. Children are being given tablets and smartphones and younger and younger ages. Since their bodies are smaller than those of adults, they are particularly susceptible to the levels of electromagnetic radiation produced by modern devices.
Studies have shown that exposure to electromagnetic radiation may be particularly damaging to a child’s developing brain. Many advocacy groups are asking the government to reconsider their guidelines for pediatric exposure to electromagnetic radiation with the belief that current standards are unsafe and misleading.
If you have children or grandchildren, encourage them to leave their phone in their backpack instead of carrying it around in their pocket. Have them turn the device off during the school day so that the device won’t emit unnecessary radiation.
Also discourage children from sleeping with their phone and instruct them to charge their phone in another room instead of charging it where they sleep.
When do Smartphones Emit the Most Radiation?
Smartphones don’t emit electromagnetic radiation at even rates throughout the day. Different activities, such as streaming videos or making a phone calls require the phone’s antenna to operate at higher power levels and, therefore, emit more harmful radiation.
Even when you aren’t using your phone at all, radiofrequency radiation is still being emitted by your smartphone. That is because, even when not in use, modern smartphones are constantly performing a range of tasks that produce radiofrequency radiation.
For example, even if your phone is in your pocket it still scans for app updates, communicates with SMS servers, downloads new emails, and pushes notifications from social media apps. All these passive activities expose you to electromagnetic radiation, even though you aren’t actively using your device.
Most smartphones shut off completely when you power them down. Without power flowing from your phone’s battery to the phone’s onboard communication systems, no radiation is emitted and your body is not exposed to the EMF generated when your phone is on.
Powering your phone off is a good way to reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation. In addition to powering off your phone when not in use, consider taking the following steps to limit your exposure to electromagnetic radiation:
Place your Phone in Airplane Mode
When your phone is placed in airplane mode, it stops transmitting the radiofrequency radiation it uses to connect with cell phone towers, GPS satellites, Bluetooth devices, and NFC transponders (Apple Pay and Android Pay). With these functions disabled, the amount of radiation emitted by your phone will be drastically reduced.
If you use your phone as an alarm clock, consider switching your phone to airplane mode at night so that you don’t unnecessarily increase your exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
Turn your Phone off
If you don’t need to use your phone as an alarm clock or if you just need a break from technology, turning your phone completely off is the best way to ensure that you aren’t increasing your exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
This solution is especially great for kids since requiring them to turn their phones off intermittently throughout the day will help them be present and connect with their surroundings.
Stop Carrying Your Phone in Your Pocket
The closer you are to your phone, the more intense its radiofrequency radiation is. Unless you have to have your phone on your person, try leaving it at least three feet away from you on your desk, in the passenger seat of your car, or in your purse.
If you insist on carrying your phone in your pocket, consider picking up an EMF-shielding pocket protector.
Don’t Use Your Phone Lying Down
When you use your phone while laying down, you are more likely to rest the phone on your abdomen or chest area. This is not a good practice because it brings your phone into direct contact with your body and into the vicinity of your organs.
Instead, try to use your phone while sitting at a desk or table with your arms extended. This will keep your phone away from your torso and head and reduce the exposure of your internal organs to its powerful EMF.
Use a Speaker Instead of Headphones
Using headphones requires your phone to remain on your person. Even Bluetooth headphones aren’t an ideal solution because they emit their own electromagnetic radiation.
Whenever possible—for example, when working out or driving—try to use a speaker to listen to music or podcasts. This way, you can listen to your favorite media without having to be in direct contact with radiofrequency-emitting electronics.
Stop Sleeping with Your Phone!
I cannot tell you how many people I meet who are guilty of this. Sleeping with your phone is bad for many reasons. Not only does this practice expose you to unnecessary radiation, but it also will lead to poor sleep quality.
In order to reduce radiation exposure and maintain the quality of your sleep, try to sleep with at least three feet between you and your phone. You can do it, I promise!

In Short, smartphones still emit radiation even when you aren’t actively using them. The best way to eliminate this radiation is to power your smartphone off completely when you aren’t using it. Other tips include putting it in airplane mode and charging it farther away from your body.
